The market for software is continually progressing as the drivers of the genre - ChessBase - have an aggressive drive for excellence (some might protest ‘at the expense of their employee satisfaction’) bringing along their smaller rivals. This is a model that could be followed in the genre of stand-alone chess computers which is awaiting a smart new entrant after Saitek’s recent takeover. Software such as Fritz and Shredder are superb, fully featured and remarkably low priced for the amount of functionality they boast.
